Dragon Challenge, also known as Dueling Dragons, is permanently closing on September 4th, 2017 to make way for a next generation thrill ride which will open in 2019. The Universal Orlando Blog confirmed that a new highly themed coaster will take its space. In addition to it being highly themed, they say it will have a few surprises along the way.Popular rumors have revolved around an Inverted Power Coaster developed by Mack Rides or a Motorbike Roller Coaster developed by Intamin. An Inverted Power Coaster is a family style coaster with dark ride elements. A Motorbike Roller Coaster is like the Tron Lightcycle Power Run found in Shanghai Disneyland and soon to be Magic Kingdom. The Motorbike Roller Coaster is a much more thrilling ride so an Inverted Power Coaster is much more likely because they want to aim for families especially to compete with all of Disney’s new announcements.
Arthur in the Minimoys Kingdom is what Mack Rides used as their product video which showcases the Inverted Power Coaster. Special features that come with the ride vehicle is on board audio (Something Magic Kingdom’s Space Mountain needs) and special effect lighting. One thing to keep in mind is how much space Dragon Challenge uses. If you think about it, it’s 2 separate coasters, just close together. Universal could fit a giant ride in that space or even multiple rides.
One last thing before you watch the video is that the inverted power coaster can run indoor and outdoors. You could start with some dark ride scenes then progress to a much more thrilling experience before going back in the show building for more dark ride elements. In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, most of the attractions use screens including the Hogwarts Express which connects the 2 lands. The only exception to this is the Flight of the Hippogriff which is a tame children’s coaster. In the Inverted Power Coaster, they have the option of putting animatronic figures instead of mostly screens. Now go ahead and watch the video so you get a general idea of the Inverted Power Coaster.
